Morphou is a small town that was founded by the Spartans. It is located in North western Cyprus, 30 miles from Nicosia. It has only 12,000 people, and is famous for its citrus fruit orchards. This is a great place to visit if you want to go somewhere that few tourists know about.

Things to do in Morphou

Morphou isn’t a great place to visit. There are some fascinating historical places here, and you will find some good place to relax and enjoy Cypriot food and wine.

I definitely recommend visiting St.Mama’s church (also known as Agios Mamas). St Mamas is the patron saint of tax avoiders. He was a poor hermit, who evaded being taxed by the authorities. Soldiers were sent to capture him, but on the way back to town, he witnessed a lion attacking a lamb. Legend has it that he escaped the soldiers, saved the lamb and rode the lion’s back into town. This bravery earned him exemption from paying tax. The church is now an icon museum, and you can see some amusing depictions of St. Mama here.

Morphou also has a natural history and archaeology museum, which displays artefacts from the Bronze and Neolithic ages, as well as items from the classical, Roman and Hellenistic periods.

Other historical places of interest include the Akdeniz village tomb, Ayios Giorgis Maronite church, Ayios Panteleimon Monastery, and Pigadhes Bronze Age Sanctuary.

Morphou has a great market where you can buy all sorts of things. It presents a good opportunity to buy some nice food, and have a picnic while you enjoy the scent of citrus fruit that blows in the breeze.

In June there is a two week Orange Festival, which originally celebrated the orange harvest.
