Cyprus Deep Rooted Heritage

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 11 September 2013 | 00:07

Since the dawn of recorded history, Cyprus has been one of the most sought-after areas in the Mediterranean.

Many countries have fought and conquer and then lost the battle for the Cyprus Empire.

Here are some of the greats who made the Island what it is today. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, along with Crusaders (Richard the Lion heart & the Knights Templar), Byzantines, Franks (Lusignans) and Ottomans, have all left a remarkable legacy for the modern day adventure to explore the riches of this great and magnificent Island we call Cyprus.

Amathus is an archaeological site in Cyprus, located near Limassol on the South of the island. It was one of the most ancient royal cities of Cyprus, and was the home of the cult of Aphrodite. It was abandoned in the 7th century, but today there are ruins that will give you an insight into the fascinating and mysterious history of the city.

Getting there

Amathus is easy to get to from Limassol, simply take the number 30 bus which runs along the shore. It’s worth asking the driver to let you know where to get off.

What to do at Amathus

You can spend a good couple of hours looking around here, and get very close to the ruins of tombs, a marketplace, the Aphrodite temple, some public baths and the city walls.

Be aware that these ruins are very old indeed, and there is little in the way of standing structures. History enthusiasts will love this spot, but children may get bored quickly here.
