Lefkara

Lefkara is a town in the centre of Cyprus, at the foot of the Troodos mountains in the Larnaca district. It is known as ‘Lefkara the beautiful’ to Cypriots, and is a picturesque town which is unaffected by tourism. It has a population of only 1000 people, and is known for making fine lace. This is a great place to start when exploring the island, and will give you an authentic taste of Cypriot life.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Larnaca, which is about 50km away. There are no buses which will take you there from the airport, so you’ll need to go by taxi or private car. A taxi will cost you around 50 Euros.

Lefkara is close to Limassol, Nicosia and Larnaca, so it’s a good place to start if you want to visit those places too. It’s also only 20km from the Governor’s beach, a very beautiful beach in the countryside.

Things to do in Lefkara

If you are staying in Lefkara, you should definitely visit the Troodos mountains. Here you will see some of the very famous and beautiful old monasteries of Cyprus, which will give you some insight into the history of our country. You will also get to see some amazing views of the island, and possibly get to visit some small wine villages.

Despite being a small town, Lefkara itself has plenty of things to do. You can visit the Lefkara Handicraft museum and the Wax museum, and find out what the town was like a couple of hundred years ago. There is a pleasant nature trail for those who enjoy a walk in the sun, and you can also visit the Saint Minas Convent and Machairas Monastery, to see some authentic Cypriot architecture.


Most of all, I would just advise taking a stroll around the area. You will see lots of beautiful scenery and interesting buildings, and you might even see the locals making lace. There are some nice restaurants where you can find good Cypriot food and drink. I recommend trying mpourekia, a savoury Cypriot pastry, and soumada, a drink made with almond extract.

Saint Lazarous Church

Saint Lazarous Church is a famous landmark in Larnaca, on the South coast of Cyprus. It is built over the supposed tomb of Lazarous, who Jesus resurrects from the dead in one of the gospel stories. Legend has it that after leaving Judea, Lazurus lived here for 30 years. The Church is also known as Ayios Lazarus.

Getting there

Getting to Larnaca town is easy, because you can fly into Larnaka airport and get a bus into town. You can also get a taxi, and it will take you about 15 minutes to get into town.

The church is in Ayios Lazaros Square, which can be found on any map of Larnaca.

What to do at Ayios Lazarus

The church has lots of interesting things to see. As you enter, notice that the porch has Latin, French and Greek inscriptions. Take some time to look at the beautiful bell tower, the 300 year-old pulpit, and the icons of religious figures.

You can also venture into the crypt to see Lazarus’ empty sarcophagus.

Tourists are welcome here, but don’t forget that it is a church and people will be worshipping here, so don’t make too much noise.

Tombs of the Kings

The Tombs of the Kings is a serious of underground tombs carved out of rock which was built around 3rd century AD. It is based about two miles North-West of the Paphos harbour in Cyprus, on the West side of the island. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where it is believed that aristocrats and important people (although not actual kings) were buried.

Getting there

Getting to the tomb from Paphos city is easy, as it is located near the city walls. From Fabrica Hill, follow the well-signposted road Leoforos Tafon ton Vasileon for 2km northwest.

What to do at the Tombs of the Kings

Give yourself at least a couple of hours to have a look around this site. There are eight tombs for you to explore, and you will be able to wonder deep down into the spacious atriums. The tombs were plundered centuries ago by squatters, and there is not much left of the frescoes that once adorned the walls, but you will be able to see the impressive structures of the tombs.

Finikoudes

Finikoudes beach is a very popular tourist location in Larnaca. It is the main beach of Larnaca town, which stretches along behind the beach. Finikoudes promenade is famous for its palm trees.

What to do on Finikoudes beach

Like any beach in Cyprus, Finikoudes is a great place to relax and soak up some sunshine. You can rent a lounger or parasol from the beach traders for extra comfort.You will also be able to do a range of water sports, or you can head down to the nearby marina and go on a boat trip.

The Finikoudes promenade is great for a stroll, and you will find many nice eateries ranging from fast food joints to sit-down restaurants. In this area you are also close to entertainment spots where you can find live music and other fun activites.

Amathus

Amathus is an archaeological site in Cyprus, located near Limassol on the South of the island. It was one of the most ancient royal cities of Cyprus, and was the home of the cult of Aphrodite. It was abandoned in the 7th century, but today there are ruins that will give you an insight into the fascinating and mysterious history of the city.

Getting there

Amathus is easy to get to from Limassol, simply take the number 30 bus which runs along the shore. It’s worth asking the driver to let you know where to get off.

What to do at Amathus

You can spend a good couple of hours looking around here, and get very close to the ruins of tombs, a marketplace, the Aphrodite temple, some public baths and the city walls.

Be aware that these ruins are very old indeed, and there is little in the way of standing structures. History enthusiasts will love this spot, but children may get bored quickly here.
